Bridges Charter School Snack Guidelines / Suggestions

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

 

Recommended whole foods for snack

Fresh Vegetables/Fruit

  • Carrots, bananas, snap pea pods, green beans, broccoli, radishes, cabbage, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, apples, pears, avocados, oranges, melons, berries, seasonal fruit and vegetables, etc.

Frozen Vegetables/Fruit

  • Peas, berries, grapes, etc.

Dried Fruit (with no sugar added)

  • Raisins, figs, dates, apples, apricots, cherries, blueberries, etc.

Fruit leather made with whole fruit & no added sugar

Potatoes, baked

Discouraged snack foods
  • Gummy fruit snacks
  • Potato chips

PROTEINS

Recommended whole foods for snack

Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Sunflower Seed Butter

  • With no added oils or sugar (some good brands are: Trader Joe’s, Laura Scudders, Maranatha, Vons Old Fashioned)

Nuts

  • Almonds, pistachios, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, etc. (Raw or dry roasted, low salt)

Seeds

  • Sunflower, sesame, pepitas, pumpkin (raw or dry roasted, low salt)

Soy

  • Tofu, edamame, dried soy “nuts”, tofu dips

Cheese

  • Low fat varieties (mozzarella, string, cottage cheese), no bgh varieties

Beans

  • Garbanzo, kidney, white, black, pinto, refried beans (vegetarian), hummus, bean dips

Yogurt

  • Plain or lightly sweetened

Eggs

  • Hardboiled

Discouraged snack foods

  • Peanut butter with added oil and sugar (e.g. Jiff, Skippy, Peter Pan)
  • Heavily oiled and salted nuts
  • Heavily salted seeds
  • Processed cheeses (e.g. American, velveeta, cheez whiz)
  • Refried beans with lard
  • Yogurt with artificial flavors, colors, and heavily sweetened (e.g. gogurts and many flavored yogurts)

GRAINS

Recommended whole foods for snack

Crackers

  • Whole grain (some brands are: Kavli, Ak Mak, Wasa, Ryvita, Barbara’s Wheatines, TJ’s Woven Wheat, Rye Krisp)

Tortillas

  • Corn, whole wheat, sprouted grains
  • Tortilla chips, baked, whole ground corn (low salt)

Breads/Bagels

  • Whole or sprouted grain
  • Whole wheat pitas

Muffins

  • Whole grain, low sugar or fruit juices, low fat

Popcorn

  • air popped

Rice Cakes

  • brown rice

Cereals, whole grain

  • Shredded wheat, puffed grains (corn, rice wheat kamut, millet), Kasha, Granola (low in both fat and sugar)

Discouraged snack foods

  • Graham crackers, Ritz, Goldfish, Keebler (These are typically made with white flour, hydrogenated oils, and corn syrup.)
  • Tortillas made with lard dough conditioners and preservatives.
  • Tortilla chips fried in hydrogenated oils and heavily salted.
  • Breads/bagels made with hydrogenated oils, sugar preservatives, dough conditioners
  • Muffins made with hydrogenated oils, heavily sugared, preservative
  • Microwave popcorn containing hydrogenated oils
  • Rice cakes with caramel
  • Cereals high in sugar (many granolas are in this category)
  • Snack bars and granola bars (high in sugar)

MISCELLANEOUS

Dips/Sauces/Spreads

  • Salsa, natural applesauce, marinara, hummus, guacamole, soy sauce (low salt), low fat bean dips or spreads
Discouraged snack foods
  • Applesauce with added sugar
  • spreads or dips that are high in saturated fat
